Fire fighter deaths from tanker truck rollovers.

چکیده

Mobile water supply vehicles, known as tankers or tenders, are widely used to transport water to areas beyond a water supply system or where the water supply is inadequate. Incidents in volving motor vehicles account for approximately 20% of U.S. fire fighter deaths each year; cases involving tankers are the most prevalent of these motor vehicle incidents. During 1977–1999, 73 deaths occurred in 63 crashes involving tankers. Of those deaths, 54 occurred in 49 crashes in which tankers rolled over (no collision), and 8 occurred in 6 crashes in which the tankers left the road (no collision). The other cases involved collision with another vehicle (10 deaths in 7 crashes) and colli sion with stationary object(s) (1 death) [NFPA 2000].

A Fire Fighter's Problem

Suppose that a circular fire spreads in the plane at unit speed. A single fire fighter can build a barrier at speed v > 1. How large must v be to ensure that the fire can be contained, and how should the fire fighter proceed? We contribute two results. First, we analyze the natural curve FFv that develops when the fighter keeps building, at speed v, a barrier along the boundary of the expanding...

Truck Accidents at Freeway Ramps: Data Analysis and High-Risk Site Identification

To examine the relationship of ramp design to truck accident rates, this paper presents an analysis of truck accidents in Washington State, plus a comparison to limited data from Colorado and California. We group freeway truck accidents by ramp type, accident type, and by four conflict areas of each merge or diverge ramp. We then compare these groups on the basis of truck accidents per location...
